Family Day Care

Family Day Care is an approved form of child care that is provided in the family day care educators own home. Family day care educators are early childhood education and care professionals, who register with a family day care service that is responsible for approving, supporting, training and advising its educators.

Children (aged from 6 weeks) are nurtured in small groups and through the educator's individualised programming are encouraged to further develop their skills and knowledge.

For more information see Handbook for Families.

Who can use Family Day Care?

Children aged from 6 weeks of age are eligible to use Greater Hume Children Services family day care service.

Costs of Family Day Care

Family day care educators are self employed contractrs who comply with the policies and procedures of the service. Educators set their own fees based on the service provided.

As an approved child care service families are eligible to apply for fee reductions from the Department Human Services.

A point of difference from child care centres is the low child to educator ratios, which allow family day care educators and children to develop very strong relationships. In addition, family day care provides families with flexible full-time, part-time, weekend or overnight care depending on the requirements of the parents. Minimum hours of care are much lower than centres.

Well done to all the team on being named NSW Coordination unit of the year. It has been a honour and a privilege to work with such a great team, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without the fantastic support from coordinators & educators in this scheme. I thank you so much for letting me be  a part of it.

Liz.'s  nature experiences with the children in her Family Day Care Service.

We live on a 5 acre property in Gerogery West. One of the favorite activities for the children is a walk in the paddock. We explore our surroundings, using all our senses. On one occasion we could hear crickets, but we could not see them. So off we went in search of the noise. The boys had not heard them before and were intrigued. They followed the noise to a clump of grass and hunched down nice and close to get a peek of the crickets. A little too close as the crickets sensed our presence and stopped. I explained the crickets could hear us coming and stopped croaking because we got too close. Now every time we get close to that clump of grass they listen in earnest trying to hear the crickets.

Michelle’s family day care is absolutely fabulous. Michelle goes above and beyond her duties as a day care mum and is very well organised. She treats the girls like she would her own children. I can go to work with the peace of mind my girls are having a great day. My girls can’t wait to get to Michelle’s each week to see what new exciting activity she will have ready for them.I would recommend Michelle’s Family Day Care to anyone.

From day one our wonderful educator has communicated with us in a very caring and understanding way and has always related to and been very approachable when it comes to Anastasia's specific needs or new requirements as she has developed. I feel absolutely comfortable leaving Anastasia with our educator and know that she will not only be cared for in a safe, clean, fun and happy environment, but she also comes home having learned various regular new skills and with new vocabulary.

Andrea said she is “absolutely” satisfied with our service.“Honestly as a parent  all I really want is for my child to be happy, healthy and safe and what she learns is a bonus. Because FDC groups are so small it is all about nurture”
