Greater Hume Children Services Celebrates 20 years, Created - Saturday, 9 August 2014

Greater Hume Children Services formerly known as Hume Billabong Family Day Care are celebrating 20 years of invaluable service to the community!

Greater Hume Children Services now encompasses In Home Care where children can receive the same standards of education and care in their own home. The service has also expanded beyond its original boundaries and operates in Albury, Wodonga, Corowa, Urana, Batlow and the surrounding areas. There are currently more than 50 registered educators and the service continues to grow. To appreciate the contribution our service has made through the tremendous work of staff and carers/educators, to thousands of children and their families over 20 years we are hosting a free children’s festival at the Jindera Recreation Reserve on Saturday 4 October, and hosting a celebratory gathering for educators and staff past and present. Please print the voucher below to receive your fee sauage and drink.

In 1994 the 3 Shires of Holbrook, Culcairn and Hume entered into a ground breaking partnership to sponsor Family Day Care within the 3 shires. The service was designed to provide trustworthy, flexible and recognised childcare to enable women to get back into the workforce as well as valuable work and career opportunities for residents wanting to start as home based child carers.
One of the first carers to be registered was Debbie Moreland from Walla Walla. Debbie who had 4 of her own children was recommended to the Hume Billabong staff from someone in the community who thought she might have the right qualities and her interview to become a Carer was held at the kitchen table. Debbie was really excited to be given an opportunity to stay at home with her children, help other young families in the community and earn an income at the same time. 20 years on and Debbie is still working in the service and putting the 10 years she worked as an educator and the next 10 years gaining experience and qualifications in administration into exceptional practice as the scheme’s Support Officer.
“There are so many fantastic stories from within the service over the years” said the schemes Manager Rose Nauer. So many of our educators have given so much of themselves and their own families to nurture, educate and care for children and in doing so strengthen and enrich their community. There is absolutely no doubt that Greater Hume Children Services has been a resounding success.
Today the scheme is very different Ms Nauer said from when it first began. “Over the years the quality assurance system has set the standards higher and higher. We have a tremendous record with quality assurance achieving above the benchmark at every level”. Today the service is assessed as “Exceeding” the national quality standard in every area.  A really exceptional achievement given that the current standard is so new. Additionally in November 2013 the service was recognised in Family Day Care Australia’s awards for excellence as NSW coordination unit of the year.
